An Exquisite Project - Apart-istsframe

So what do framers do when they can’t frame? Earlier this spring, when we were all quarantining safely at home, our talented framing consultants at AFS teamed up to keep their artistic skills sharp and to stay connected. Together, they participated in an exquisite corpse exercise, a surrealist drawing game that relies on collaborative drawing.

How did it work? One person knew they had the person’s "head" and one the "tail" and everyone else was given a specific size to work with and some direction on how their image would line up with their neighbors. That was it!

Everyone sent back all kinds of mediums and color schemes, and once we were safely reopened, we put them together and framed it up. A true testament to our team’s artistic talents, it looked surprisingly cohesive even though each piece is unique and was done in a vacuum. The head and tail were fixed placements, but we composed the rest of the body to balance the color. Once the layout of pieces was determined, we chose a neutral float board to put behind everything. Since there are all different types of mediums and substrates, each individual piece was hinged down and built up as needed to be the same thickness.

For the frame choice, we were liking the colorful metallics and several tones looked good. Instead of choosing a single color, we pulled an old framer trick out of the bag. Each leg of the frame is made out of a different color within the same line of frames - truly making the frame an exquisite corpse on its own. Check it out below!
