Our Story

In 1978, Jay Goltz started Artists Frame Service on Clybourn Avenue, then an abandoned factory district.

He was determined to raise the bar for professional framing with more artful design, better choices and faster service. The company grew very quickly, soon becoming the largest custom frame shop in the country. In the early 90s, Jay began developing relationships with manufacturers in Italy and Spain, whose exquisite products were not yet available in the American market. Today, many of our frames are exclusive to Artists Frame Service.

Then there are the people. Many have been with the company for over 20 years and possess art and design backgrounds. They know their stuff and have a passion for framing that borders on the obsessive. From the buyers who learn Italian to facilitate annual trips to Italy where they help create exclusive frames, to the framing consultants who work with clients to find the perfect frame and mat for that modern art piece or vintage flea market find, to the craftspeople in the company’s 30,000-square-foot facility who are empowered to stop the process if any frame doesn’t meet their excruciatingly high standards.

Today, our parent company, The Goltz Group, consists of a thoughtfully curated collection of four design-minded businesses with a shared vision of helping customers create inspired places to live and work.
